The Research blog area is a space for our postgraduate students to showcase their research projects and for the wider RSVP community to read and enjoy!
Each post will include the contact details of our featured writer. We encourage you to get in touch with them for further discussion of the topics raised.

The VanArsdel Prize is awarded annually to the best graduate student essay investigating Victorian periodicals and newspapers. The prize was established in 1990 to honour Rosemary VanArsdel, a founding member of RSVP whose groundbreaking research continues to shape the field of nineteenth-century periodical studies. The deadline for this year’s award competition is May 1, 2015. The winner will receive $500 and publication in the spring 2016 issue of Victorian Periodicals Review. Submissions should be 15-25 pages, excluding notes and bibliography. Manuscripts should not have appeared in print. Members of the RSVP community interested in conducting research into Charles Dickens’s Household Words or All the Year Round can now visit the Suzannet Research Library at the Charles Dickens Museum. The library contains primary and secondary research material ranging from publications to scrapbooks, relating to the life and times of Charles Dickens as well and is open to researchers by appointment 10.30-12.30pm and 1.30-3.30pm under the supervision of curator, Louisa Price who can be contacted at Louisa.price@dickensmuseum.com or on the main museum line 020 7405 2127.

Places are still available for this free, one-day workshop taking place 7 July 2014.
The workshop will provide an opportunity to reflect upon and develop a number of digital Dickens projects, including a sequence of online serial reading projects and Dickens Journals Online (DJO). The organizers intend for the event to enrich the development of digital Dickens projects by increasing participation and building confidence and competence in engaging in online communities and using social media.
The workshop will also offer an opportunity to think about recent research in this area, and encourage participants to make connections between their forms of scholarship in different media.

We are pleased to announce the winner of the 2014 VanArsdel Award: Ann Hale, a doctoral student at the University of Greenwich. Her essay, “W. T. Stead and Participatory Reader Networks in The Link and The Review of Reviews,” will appear in the Spring 2015 issue of Victorian Periodicals Review. Congratulations!
